  • Panelists Kenneth Proefrock, NMD, Mary Rondeau, ND, RH (AHG), and Donald Yance, CN, RH (AHG) tackle the pressing issue of polypharmacy in the elderly. The panelists identify nutritional and botanical therapies to alleviate the most problematic medications, offering practical solutions for better geriatric health.
  • Jillian Stansbury, ND discusses nootropics and herbs that support cerebrovascular health to address chronic mood disorders in elders. Gain insights from the latest molecular research to craft effective herbal formulas for this demographic.
  • Lastly, Mary Bove, ND explores the critical role of senescent cells in the aging process and age-related diseases. Discover how botanical senolytic agents can help target and clear these dysfunctional cells, promoting overall geriatric health.

Aging and the Immune System: Using Botanical and Dietary Compounds for Immune Enhancement and Clearance of Senescent Cells to Combat Aging, Infection, and Chronic Disease
Donald Yance, CN, RH (AHG)
This presentation begins by defining immune senescence and describes what happens in the immune system as we age. It then goes on to discuss the botanicals and nutrients specifically targeting the protection of an aging immune system and how they work synergistically for the greatest effect. Specific dietary interventions for immune system support, including gut health, are covered, along with the application of botanicals in acute situations, including respiratory illness.

turmeric rootPanel: Prevention of Cognitive Decline as We Age
Chanchal Cabrera, FNIMH, RH (AHG); Katie Stage, ND, RH (AHG); FABNG; and Jillian Stansbury, ND
With over 5 million US citizens afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease, and that number predicted to rise to 7 million in few more years, cognitive decline is one of the most pressing challenges our society faces. This panel examines current theories of causation of cognitive decline and pharmaceutical agents in use today, their side effects and general effectiveness, contrasted with recommendations for diet, lifestyle, botanical and nutritional programs to protect our cognitive ability as we age.

Herbs and Nutrients for Enhancing Cognitive Function
Jillian Stansbury, ND
Oxidative stress and inflammatory load in the body can contribute to neuronal damage, and agents that can help protect, repair, and regenerate nerves may be helpful. Medium chain triglycerides and metabolic optimization can help prevent, and possibly slow the progression of neuronal degeneration. Herbs shown to support cholinergic transmission have given rise to several prescription pharmaceuticals. These and other cholinesterase-inhibiting botanical medicines are discussed along with basic protocol ideas for treating cognitive impairment.

Healthy Aging: Research Summary on Prevention of Musculoskeletal Degeneration, Memory Loss and Other Conditions of Aging
Christopher Hobbs, PhD, LAc
Science review includes latest clinical trials, meta-analyses, and epidemiological focused on cognitive and memory decline and musculoskeletal degeneration. Reviews the latest science on the link between diet (especially the Mediterranean diet), supplementation (for instance with vitamin D, omega fatty acids), and the regular or daily use of herbs like anti-inflammatories (turmeric, ginger, etc.), immune-supplementation (with medicinal mushrooms).

Botanicals for Frailty in Elders
Lise Alschuler, ND, FABNO
Frailty, or a decline in age-specific fitness, affects some elders and is associated with poor quality of life, poorer surgical outcomes, and reduced physical and mental stamina. Frailty exists as the opposite of fitness, thus supporting fitness in elders is of key importance. While nutritional status, physical activity and mental health are key determinants of elder fitness, botanicals offer an important strategy as well. This presentation will focus on several botanicals such as Artemesia spp., Curcuma longa, Astragalus membranaceus, Cordyceps, Crataegus spp, Boswellia serrata and Withania somnifera; each of which can support fitness and reduce specific measures of frailty in elders.

rosemaryPanel: Reducing Medication Prescriptions and Side Effects in our Elders
Kenneth Proefrock, NMD; Mary Rondeau, ND, RH (AHG); and Donald Yance, CN, RH (AHG)
Polypharmacy in the elderly is an increasing issue and medication side effects affect this population greater than younger generations. Co-morbid conditions can make the treatment of mental health and other issues in the elderly more complex. Decreased nutritionally dense diets, decreased volume of food and waning ability of the body to absorb nutrients are all contributing factors to health challenges in elderly adults. This panel will focus on medications that can be the most problematic, concerns with polypharmacy in our elders, plus nutritional considerations and botanical medicines that are beneficial.

Depression in the Elderly
Jillian Stansbury, ND
Chronic mood disorders in the elderly may not respond to pharmaceutical interventions as expected, nor to anxiolytic and anti-depressant herbal medicines as do other populations. This class explores cerebrovascular-supportive and nootropic herbs, nutrients, and specific molecular research useful in crafting herbal formulas for mood disorders in the elder decades.

Senescence, Senolytics, and Aging
Mary Bove, ND
Senescent cells play a key role in the aging process and in age-related diseases. Senolytic agents selectively target dysfunctional senescent cells and aid in clearing these dysfunctional cells from the body. This looks at several botanical senolytic agents, their application, dosing, and compounding several agents in formulation and safety.
