Medicines from the Earth 2004, Tape #31

Title: The Cholesterol Conundrum

Speaker:  Robert Rountree, MD

The proper balance of blood lipids is essential to the functioning of the body.  Recently, high cholesterol has been thought responsible for heart disease and stroke, but here is a voice of reason, analyzing the different types of cholesterol (HDL, LDL subtypes, etc) and questioning the reclassification of "high" cholesterol and the corresponding increase in the prescription of statin drugs. Cholesterol levels can often be managed with diet, nutrients and herbs.  The discussion include therapeutic uses of the antioxidant vitamins along with flavonoids, tocotrienols, phytosterols, turmeric, garlic, mukul myrrh, artichoke, red yeast rice and psyllium seed for managing cholesterol levels.
